So, while this summer’s trek is billed as a “co-headliner,” King said each and every date on the tour will end with a set from Manson.
“It is completely co-headlining, except that he wanted to close every day, and we’re like, ‘Hey, knock yourself out,’ ” King said. “We’ve been in so many situations like that, and sometimes, it’s better not to be the last band on. So, we’re just kind of happy about it. I don’t have the ego that makes me – and I’m not saying Manson does – but I don’t have the ego that makes me have to close every show. I won’t be playing any longer, and we’ll be done with our show and be able to chill for a change.”

Rock My Monkey: Do you think this cd would have such a strong Nine Inch Nails influence if Danny and Charlie were not involved?
Wes Borland: No. Charlie was only involved on Lie, on the one song. But Danny definitely has his feel and sound that he brings to the equation. He was in that band for ten years. Before that he was in Skrew. He’s been a programmer for so long. He’s just really amazing when it comes to sense and sound design and stuff like that. Then we also have Josh Eustis from Telefon Tel Aviv which is this big kind of Aphex Twin off texture so there was a lot of that going on too. I think the next album is going to be – I mean, this was a guitar heavy album, but the next album is going to be even more guitar heavy and a little less synth. Yeah, I don’t think it would have sounded as Nails-ey had somebody from Nails not been producing it. But I love it. I’m super happy with the results.
Rock My Monkey: There was once a rumor that you turned down a chance to join Nine Inch Nails for reasons other Limp Bizkit. What is the real story?
Wes Borland: I had the spot for a while in Nails, and had been meeting with Trent for some time. He was a pleasure to chat with, and actually gave me a bunch of feedback on the Black Light Burns record, and listened to a lot of the songs and gave me a lot of direction. But I ended up wanting to work on that more, and not wanting to go off and be a support for someone else’s vision, if that makes sense.

Given that the alternative music scene you emerged from claimed so many casualties at the height of its power, who do you look upon as your own contemporaries these days, ideologically speaking?
There are many musicians who are just as pissed off about what the Bush administration does as the rest of the world is. Every record that comes across my desk, from Arcade Fire to Bright Eyes to Nine Inch Nails, to you just naming something: every new record seems to have some point of view about what’s going on in the world. But at the same time I think that’s indicative of the desperate times that we live in, and that indignation needs to be tethered to action.
