How did you manage to hook up the opportunity to drum for NIN, and did you have to go through a proper audition for it? How much pressure was on you to impress Trent Reznor?
The whole thing happened pretty quickly. I know Trent saw me play at the Reading festival last year and liked what he saw. But a friend of mine also techs for NIN, so when Josh left, I think he gave Trent my info and Trent got in touch with me about trying out. I would say it was a proper audition but not a typical one. I jammed with everybody at a soundcheck of one of the shows. Surprisingly I didn’t really feel under pressure because if there’s anywhere I feel comfortable, it’s behind the drums.
Considering you are almost as old as the band, what was your first reaction when you were confirmed to be taking over THE Josh Freese?
I was very excited to fill the shoes. As great of a drummer as Josh Freese is, I love a bit of competition!
It has never been done before, but do you reckon you can pull off “The Perfect Drug” live?
I definitely think I can handle whatever is thrown my way. But I honestly don’t think it hasn’t been performed live because a drummer wasn’t been able to handle it. I don’t know how Trent feels about the song, but if he wants to play it, I’m in.
