http://www.examiner.com/x-10924-Networking-Examiner~y2009m6d12-Exiting-the-Network-3-Lessons-from-Trent-Reznor

1. Understand Your Audience: In Reznor’s own words, “I found myself realizing that for me to have any concept of how to interact with the community and know what they might want / what they find appropriate, I need to immerse myself in that world and live it for a while.” (Source: NIN.com) So immerse he did, but unfortunately the “idiots” and “Metal Sludge contingency” (as he calls them) followed him into new media. The lesson? Know the good and bad of your contingency and fully expect that a disproportionately small percentage of outliers can ruin the experience for everyone.
2. You Control Your Own Content: Much of what upsets Reznor is the unexpected fan reaction to the real him. Again in his own words – “I watched some of you get more engaged because you started to realize there’s a person (flaws and all) back there, and I watched some of you recoil in horror because I’m not what you projected on me.” (Source: NIN.com). The lesson? Think through the implications of the content you choose to share.
3. But Control Is Relative: When you put yourself out there, you immediately cede many aspects of control to the network and are limited by the features and functions of the online tools you choose. Said Reznor, “I had thought a while ago about attempting to start a mainstream public forum that required real verification of it’s participants for purposes of context.” (Source: NIN.com) The lesson? Do your research and maintain awareness of your rights, user controls and policies to address any misuse or abuse of your network.
