‘Mad’ Manson’s like a hurricane
Bit of a bruiser: Marilyn Manson

On a swelteringly hot day, Marilyn Manson is in his hotel room wearing head-to-toe leather, a black hood and dark glasses. His face is caked in white make-up, his mouth is lipsticked in plum, and he’s drinking a large, lunchtime glass of absinthe.
After applying some kohl (“I need to fix my face”) he sits down on a sofa and tells me to sit next to him. Then he asks for a hug. Then he curls up with his head in my lap. By the end of the interview, I’ve been cuddled, kissed and licked on the cheek – while a “special friend”, Esme, laughs at him from the corner.
We’re supposed to be talking about his new album, The High End Of Low, so I try. He’s described it as “my Hurricane Katrina”. What does that mean? “It represents my personality. Like Katrina, I ruin everything. I fuck shit up.”
Meaning relationships? He divorced burlesque star Dita Von Teese in 2007, and ended a subsequent relationship with 21-year-old actress Evan Rachel Wood last year. “Yes. I’m Nero and I’ll burn the city down. If I had the integrity to kill myself I would. If I ever do, though, I won’t go easy. There will be a hundred other people dead first.”
It’s hard to tell whether or not he’s joking – after all, he seems to enjoy playing the pantomime villain. Is this part of the act? In response, he turns to Esme and says: “Show her your butt.” She pulls up her skirt to reveal large, purple bruises. “You shouldn’t be shocked. I’m 100 per cent against violence towards women.” Then he giggles. “It’s just that you Brits bruise easily.”
Manson is fond of saying he’s “insane” – does he actually have mental health issues? He laughs and plants a lipsticky kiss on my cheek. “That’s the best question I’ve ever been asked. I have so many issues I could be a magazine.”
I decide to leave him to his liquid lunch; he decides it’s time to give me a fireman’s lift out the door. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone as crazy as Manson, which is just what he wants you to think. Hey – it sells records.

彼が冗談を言っているかどうかを見分けることは困難だ――結局、彼はパントマイムの悪者を演じて楽しんでいるようだ。これは演技の一部だろうか？彼はそれに応えて、エスメを振り返ってこう言った：「彼女に君のお尻を見せてやれよ」彼女はスカートを捲り上げ、大きな、紫色の痣を見せた。「別にショックを受ける事はない。私は女性への暴力には100％反対している」そして彼は含み笑いをする。「単に、君たち英国人はアザになりやすいんだろう」
マンソンは彼が「狂っている」と言うのが好きだ――実際に、彼には精神衛生上の問題があるのだろうか？彼は笑って私の頬に口紅をべったりつけたキスをする。「それは、私がこれまでに尋ねられた最高の問題だよ。私には、雑誌で取り上げられたように多くの問題がある」
私は、彼の昼食代わりの酒からお暇することに決めた：彼は、もう私を担架で追い出す時間だと決めたようだ。私は自分が、これまでにマンソン以上に狂った人間に出会ったことが無いと思う。そして、それは彼が君にそう思わせたい事でもある。ヘイ、それはレコードのセールスだ。
皇帝ネロはローマに放火し、ヒットラーは「パリは燃えているか」と言った事は有名ですね。どうも、妙齢の女性ライターさんを前にすると、マンソンは張り切ってサービスし過ぎてしまうようです。
文中の女性（エスメ）はバーレスク・パフォーマーのエスメ・ビアンコ嬢のようです。ロンドンの愛人でしょうか。港ごとに女がいるのね。一度、皆さんおそろいでマージャン大会でもやったらどうかしら。
