MM: Right.
Marta: Do you remember me? No?
MM: I’m trying to…
Marta: That’s alright, I had black hair. We toured together, a couple summers ago.
MM: Oh.
Marta: I play in Bleeding Through.
MM: I didn’t know that.
Marta: That’s OK. You don’t have to.
MM: Bleeding Through?
Marta: You working on a new album?
Manson: That’s when you don’t wear a tampon with your underwear, right?
Marta: It’s true, it’s true.
MM: I am working on a new album.
Marta: Yes, we’re very excited about it. “We” as in my whole life. Are you excited about it?
MM: I actually am. It sounds really death metal.
Marta: Really?
MM: Yeah.
Marta: I’m going to love it.
MM: Fuck, no I already love it. We were doing a song that was going to be involved with some vampire TV show and they were trying to tell me what to do, and I said “don’t tell me what to do”, so I didn’t do that. But you know we’ve got 13 songs. Cause I moved into pretty much a loft right above a liquor store.
Marta: Awesome.
MM: So I got all I need: Liquor, I’ve got my paints, my band, my musics.
Marta: Awesome. And what else you need? Like a little kitty?
MM: I have two cats. Breasts. These are all the things you need in life. Basics.
Marta: Awesome. So when does it come out? Or when is it hoped for?
MM: I don’t know. The good news is that we’re not on Interscope anymore so we are kind of planning our future differently. And I want to try and do something different.
Marta: Pave the way for us.
MM: I don’t want to put out records the same way people do anymore. I would rather – if I want to sell turds, if you want to buy a turd – how dare me not to sell it. It’s my obligation! I want to have a business card that says “Turd Salesman”. Here’s my card!
Marta: I bet I can get one made for you. How about that?
MM: I already got one. Bam – done!
Marta: What am I going to sell?
MM: I don’t know. That’s up to you. Tampons?
Marta: Fair enough, good talking to you.

ＭＭ：思い出してみるよ・・・
マルタ：あらそう、あたしは黒髪よ。何年か前の夏に一緒にツアーしたことがあるわ。

マルタ：あたしはBleeding Throughでプレイしてるの。
ＭＭ：そりゃ知らなかったな。
マルタ：もういいわ。別に必要ないし。
ＭＭ：Bleeding Through（血の染み）だって？
マルタ：新譜を書いてるんですって？
マンソン：それは君がタンポンをつけずにパンティーを履いているってことかい？
マルタ：そうそう（笑）！
ＭＭ：俺は新譜を書いているよ。
マルタ：ええ、あたしたちはそれにとっても興奮しているわ。人生のすべてという意味よ。あなたはそれに興奮しているの？
ＭＭ：ああ、現実にね。それはマジでデスメタルのようだよ。
マルタ：本当？
ＭＭ：ああ。
マルタ：きっと大好きになると思うわ。
ＭＭ：いやいや、俺はとっくに気に入ってるよ。俺達がどこかのヴァンパイア番組に関連した曲を作ってた時、連中が俺に指図したんだが、俺はこう言ってやった、「いちいち指図するな」ってね、だからそれはボツになったのさ。だが、俺たちはもう13曲も作ったんだ。何しろ俺は酒屋のすぐ隣に引っ越したからね。
マルタ：すごーい。
ＭＭ：つまり俺は必要なものをみんな手に入れた：酒、絵を描くこと、俺のバンド、俺の音楽をね。
マルタ：いいわね。その他に何がほしいの？かわいい猫ちゃんとか？
ＭＭ：俺は二匹の猫を飼ってるよ。オッパイもね。人生で必要なものはそれだけさ。基本だな。
マルタ：いいわねー。それで、（アルバムは）いつ出るの？いつ頃になりそうかしら？
ＭＭ：知るか。唯一の吉報は、俺たちがもうインタースコープと無関係で、俺達がそれ以外の未来を計画しているって事だな。
マルタ：私達のために道を拓いてくださいね。
ＭＭ：人々が、もう二度と同じやり方でレコードを出さないように願うね。むしろ俺は――もしも俺がそのクソを売りたいか、人々がそれを買いたいと望むとしても――それを売らないとは言えないだろう。それは俺の義務さ！俺は「クソを売るセールスマン」と書いた名刺を欲しいね。これが俺の名刺さ！
マルタ：私はきっとあなたに取っておきをあげられると思うわ。どう思う？
ＭＭ：もう持ってるよ。バーン！ほらね。
マルタ：私は何を売ればいいの？
ＭＭ：知るか。それは君次第だよ。タンポンかな？
マルタ：そりゃそうね、お話できて嬉しかったわ。

When you formed a friendship with Trent Reznor, did he have an opinion about it? Do you think he noticed or sensed that turmoil in your music?
Gary Numan: We’ve never talked about it directly. My wife talks to Trent far more than I do. I’m not very good at talking, believe it or not, especially when I’m around other artists. I tend to get a little bit quiet, but my wife is brilliant. I have a feeling that Trent’s opinion of my albums throughout the ages was less and less positive up to Machine + Soul. I think he was seeing the same things that I eventually saw, that the Gary Numan element of it was being taken out. I will ask him about it one day, and it’d probably be quite painful to listen to, but I would be convinced that he would agree that those albums got progressively worse until things started to change again.
