Have you been influenced in turn by the various movements and artists you’ve inspired?
At times. The most obvious would be industrial music and what that has evolved into. Trent Reznor, for example, has said some very kind things about my influence on the early days of Nine Inch Nails, and, for my part, Nine Inch Nails has been one of my favourite and most influential bands on my music for many years. But it goes beyond that. Many of the cover versions and samples that have been taken from my songs have shown me different ways of doing things and so have helped me to constantly re-evaluate what I do and how I do it. I still think of myself as a bumbling amateur. I still have an enormous amount to learn and so I am always looking at what other people are doing and I’m always looking critically at myself, trying to improve, trying to make sure I don’t make the same mistake twice, trying to find new and exciting sounds and to find new ways of doing things. Much of that passion comes from hearing what people do with my old ideas and how they make something new and exciting from them.
