How did you get involved with Marilyn Manson?
Marilyn Manson first called me at 3am one morning and I just went ‘ha ha ha’ – I did not believe it was him. I thought it was a joke. We met in Los Angeles. He said I am the biggest director ever. He is a very intelligent man, very shy. He loves my movie Holy Mountain and wants me to direct a movie he has written called Holy Wood. It is completely against Hollywood. The trouble is that he needs to get $20million from Hollywood to make it. They will not give it to him. We are making a different movie together though. Marilyn will act in it. He will play an old Pope who rapes a young girl.
Is it true you officiated as ‘priest’ at his 2005 marriage to Dita Von Teese?
Sure, it’s true. In Holy Mountain I played the alchemist with the white coat and he said he dreamed to be married by me in that costume. I said: ‘That costume doesn’t exist anymore, it was 30 years ago’. He said: ‘Give me your measurements and I will make your costume’. And he did. I had this beautiful set of robes and in the ceremony I united them both by the power of air, water, earth and fire – the four elements. Intellect, stability, emotion, sexuality. It was very nice.
They split up recently. Is it your fault?
No, no. I told Marilyn Manson: ‘You are a performance. I do not know you without make-up, no one knows you without make-up’. He married this girl, she is also a performer and when he married it was performance. When reality comes after it is not possible for them. Now he is with a girl with humanity.
