KTVU.com: I’ve also been listening recently to the new Goon Moon album by Chris Goss [frequent QOTSA production partner and leader of the band Masters of Reality] and Desert Sessions regular Jeordie White [aka Twiggy Ramirez, former guitarist for Marilyn Manson and current Nine Inch Nails member]. It seems there’s a certain dovetailing of the approach with both albums, because it has a similar mix of totally harsh dissonance that gives way to the classic Chris Goss vocals and melodies…
Josh Homme: I always called Chris’ singing a glass of milk (laughs)…
KTVU.com: Were you guys listening to each others stuff while you worked on the two albums?
Josh Homme: They were done independently, but I think in a lot of ways they both owe themselves to the Desert Sessions, which [in turn] owes its credit not to one person at all. There’s something about the desert – and I don’t think I mean that in the way that everyone else does. There’s just something about the space and the ability to do something without comment by anyone else. I don’t think that Chris or Twiggs feel they have to dress to impress with Goon Moon. I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re sort of like ‘We’re doing this for ourselves and it sounds like this.’ It sounds utterly confusing with moments of epiphany at the same time.

It’s exactly this religious commentary that validates Manson’s music for me. Declaring himself the antichrist certainly makes him an easy target, but such statements are much more evocative than your typical, Psalm-regurgitating Christian music track. Consider one of my favorite lines from “Disposable Teens”: “I’ve never really hated a one true God / But the God of the people I hated.” In two sentences, Manson gives his own, and likely many others’, reasoning for strayed faith. The music is reactionary, yes, but it is this reaction that validates religion as a significant element of the cultural air – affecting, even if offensive.

In borrowing so explicitly, Skold implicitly recognizes another of Manson’s strengths: Manson is a popularizer, not an innovator. The singer knows how to feed off others and then repurpose the best parts for his ghoulish but purposefully tamer music. Manson delays the audience’s recognition of all this by cloaking it in his strident, everyday-is-Halloween shtick. He looks, acts and sings so different from every other performer that some listeners might not immediately notice the similarities between his songs and old classics by Bauhaus and Throbbing Gristle.

So mitgenommen war Manson vom Ende der Beziehung, erzählt er, dass ihm sogar die Kraft zum Selbstmord fehlte. Zwar reichte die Energie, einen Sorgerechtsstreit um die beiden Katzen Lily und Aleister in die Wege zu leiten, aber die Ehe war dafür verantwortlich, dass “ich mich geändert hatte, um der Öffentlichkeit zu gefallen”.
