Marilyn Manson: ‘I haven’t felt this confident about an album for 15 years’
Marilyn Manson has told NME he feels more confident about his forthcoming album ‘The Pale Emperor’ than any of his releases since 2000’s ‘Holy Wood’.
‘The Pale Emperor’ is released on January 19 and is the first collaboration between Manson and new bandmate Tyler Bates, a film composer best known for his work on ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’.
Manson told NME: “The album feels tied in to the fable of Mephistopheles, where life is fated. I haven’t felt this way since ‘Holy Wood’, where fate has brought things together for a reason. It feels as if things were meant to fall into this exact place. This isn’t the ultimate of what I can achieve, but I’m showing proper respect for myself and what I’ve created in the past. It’s what was meant to be.”
The album was recorded at Bates’ home studio in Los Angeles, and Manson revealed several of his vocals were from first takes. He said: “This album is real rock and roll, and it happened naturally. It felt like ‘Wow, this is suddenly what I’m supposed to do.’ Tyler would write the music and say ‘Would you like to sing on this?’ At the end of ‘Third Day Of A Seven Day Binge’, you can hear me improvising lyrics, going ‘Mm, mm, hmm’ while Tyler’s guitar comes across my vocals. It felt right while it was happening, and there were no songs that didn’t get finished.”
Manson’s only confirmed UK show is on June 13, when he headlines the second stage of Download Festival, the same day that Muse headline the main stage. On December 5, Manson guested at The Smashing Pumpkins’ concert at London’s Koko, performing ‘Third Day Of A Seven Day Binge’ and ‘Ava Adore’.

マンソンはNMEに語る；「アルバムは、人生の運命とともに、メフィストフェレスの寓話に基づいている。私は、『ホーリーウッド』以来、このように、物事が運命づけられているように感じたことがなかった。まるで、すべてがあるべき場所に収まったように思える。これが私の最高傑作というわけではないが、私は、自分自身と、過去の作品への敬意を示している。これこそが、あるべき姿だ」
アルバムは、ロサンゼルスのベイツのホーム・スタジオでレコーディングされ、マンソンは彼の最初のボーカル・テイクについて明かした。彼は言う：「このアルバムは本物のロックンロールで、それは自然に生まれた。それはまるで、『ワオ、俺はまさにやるべき事をやってるぞ！」という感じだった。タイラーは曲を書いて、こう言う：「これに歌を載せてみるかい？」と。「サード・デイ・オブ・ア・セヴン・デイ・ビンジ」の最後に、タイラーのギターと私のヴォーカルが交差する、即興のハミング（ウーン、ウーン）の歌詞があるだろう。それが起こったときに、まさに最高に思えて、それ以上の歌詞はいらなかった」
マンソンの現時点での唯一の英国のライブは、6月13日のダウンロード・フェスティバルで、彼はミューズの日にセカンド・ヘッドライナーとして告知されている。12月5日に、マンソンはロンドンのKokoで、スマッシング・パンプキンズのライブにゲスト出演し、「アドア」と「サード・デイ・オブ・ア・セヴン・デイ・ビンジ」をパフォーマンスした。
