Bates says that he and the director “have found ourselves in a longterm relationship now,” and the musician’s also found a kindred spirit in Marilyn Manson. Bates co-write and produced the rocker’s upcoming album and also is his lead guitarist on his Manson’s tour. (One of the new tracks, Cupid Carries a Gun, is used as the title song of the WGN TV series Salem.)
“I try and have a very rounded musical experience in my life,” Bates says. “I don’t think you can sit at a desk and type scores out all day long and continue to have something fresh.
“Manson is a huge fan of films, a very common interest there as well as in music. We bring something out very positive in each other and it’s fun.”
That is, when him and Manson aren’t being pulled off stage like last month in Russia due to a bomb threat. The rest of the shows were then cancelled due to religious protests.
Bates will be going back on the road to Japan, South Africa and Europe soon, he says. “Hopefully I won’t be blown up.”
