Marilyn Manson Paints His Masterpiece

Hitler’s naked, and he has breasts. If this is pop music, it must be Marilyn Manson.
Actually, it’s more pop art than music. Manson, who has been laying uncharacteristically low in recent years, may be on the verge of another well-orchestrated period of self-exposure. He recently appeared for the first time on ‘The Tonight Show,’ and on Halloween he presided over the grand opening of his new Hollywood art gallery, the Celebritarian Corporation Gallery of Fine Art. Besides the hermaphroditic Hitler, Manson’s paintings include portraits of such haunted Americans as Edgar Allan Poe and Jon-Benet Ramsey.
The erstwhile Public Enemy Number One is also finishing work on ‘Phantasmagoria: The Visions of Lewis Carroll,’ a horror film in which he’ll star, as well as a new studio album, his first since 2003. With so many outlets, Manson tells Rolling Stone, these days he prefers the catch-all term “artist” to being called a singer.
“I just want to uphold a level of integrity,” he says. That’s our Marilyn — always worried about what people will think.

In May this great prog-metal band released a weird and immersive new album, “10,000 Days” (Tool Dissectional/Volcano/SonyBMG); it sold more than half a million copies in its first week. That was proof that this band has a big and passionate following. But don’t be fooled by the absurd packaging (with built-in lenses for the stereoscopic images). This band can still bash out a meaty rock song. Tool’s current single, “The Pot,” recently topped Billboard’s mainstream rock chart; it’s the first No. 1 of the band’s career. It starts sneakily, with Maynard James Keenan intoning the lyrics (a rant against hypocrisy, or so it seems) over a labyrinthine bass line and some percussion. Eventually the guitar riff arrives, swinging hard and heavy, along with that now-famous refrain: “You musta been high.” This is a song meant to be blasted on the radio ― or, if you prefer, buried in the middle of a 76-minute rock epic.
